School's First Day of School by: Adam Rex

A new school has been built in a town and it is very nervous about having children come through her doors.  Author Adam Rex captures the emotion of being nervous when doing something for the first time perfectly in his new book School's First Day of School.

School's only friend after being built is Janitor and that is just fine with school.  Janitor takes the time each day to clean the building and visit with school.  When Janitor tells school that teachers and students will be coming soon School is very nervous.  At first School is happy seeing so many children but when a few students say they they hate school and one girl cries as she enters school which makes school feel bad. School accidentally sets off the fire alarm and feels very sorry.  Can school make it through day one?  Will the children return to school?  When Janitor and school visit at the end of the first day School is hopeful that they will return.

I really liked this book and will be reading it the first week of school to my own students.  I like how the school is experiencing the feelings that most of us feel on the first day of school.  I know you and your child will also like this book, especially if you have a child that is attending school for the very first time.

It Came in the Mail by: Ben Clanton

 Do you remember when you were a child and you wished for mail?  In Ben Clanton's newest book It Came in the Mail Liam looks every day, almost every minute, to see if he has received mail.  He never finds any mail until one day he has an idea!  What if he sent mail?!  If he sent mail maybe he would receive mail.  He writes a letter to his mailbox asking for mail and soon he is getting all sorts of mail.  A dragon, an elephant, a funny bone and much more.  What will Liam do with all this mail?  You and your child will enjoy finding out when you read this book.

I enjoyed this story and I look forward to sharing it with the children in my world.  I may just need to write a note to my mailbox and see what is delivered to me.

After reading this book write a note to a friend and send it in the mail.

Bounce, Stretch, and Wiggle by: Doreen Cronin

These three books might be books that you have already read but I just discovered them and shared them with my younger students.  We all fell in love with these stories and had a fun time wiggling and stretching with the dog who stars in the stories.  Thank you Doreen Cronin for writing these books, Bounce, Stretch, and Wiggle.  I love them all and plan on giving these as gifts to many of my young reader friends.

As you read these alone or with your child you will have a fun time getting up and moving.  These books make reading more than just a sitting activity.

Where's the BaBOOn? by: Michael Escoffier

This book is a great read aloud that all my students enjoyed.  I loved sharing it with them too!

Author Michael Escoffier in his book Where's The BaBOOn? takes readers on a hide and seek adventure.  Readers are not only looking for animals they are looking for words inside of other words.  For example when asked Who is the Headmaster? the animal that is the Headmaster is found in the word Headmaster as well as in the picture, Hamster!  Illustrator Kris Di Giacomo does a great job with each page and the reader is anxious to turn the page to find the next animal.  And exactly where is that BaBOOn?

After reading this book I suggest you head off to a zoo near you!

Creepy Carrots by: Aaron Reynolds

Jasper the rabbit is experiencing something very strange, carrots are following him everywhere, it is really quite creepy!  Aaron Reynolds has written a very fun read aloud with his book Creepy Carrots!

Why are the carrots from the field following Jasper?  Jasper loves these carrots!  I'm sure Jasper thinks that the carrots should love him too.  So why are they following him?  It is a question with a funny answer.  Be sure to read this book to find out about Jasper and his problem carrots.

My students love this book, it is never on a shelf since they all want to read this themselves.

Enjoy a healthy snack of carrots after reading this book.

Dragons Love Tacos by: Adam Rubin

Adam Rubin has written a very fun story, one you will want to share with any Dragon loving child.  The book Dragons Love Tacos will have your child wanting to have their very own Dragon Taco Party.

Dragons really love their tacos and all kinds of parties.  This means that taco parties are really a big hit with dragons.  There is just one small thing that dragons do not like with their tacos and if they have this, LOOK OUT!  I won't spoil it, you must read to find out what you must never give to a dragon.

Be sure to read this book on a Taco Tuesday kind of day you will love it!

Max the Brave by: Ed Vere

Max the Brave is a delightful read aloud book written and illustrated by Ed Vere.

Max is a sweet kitten who chases mice.  However he isn't exactly sure what a mouse is?  He meets a variety of animals that all claim they are not a mouse.  Soon Max meets a monster, will Max really be brave?

My students giggled as I read this story to them and we all loved meeting Max the Brave in this book.   I look forward to more adventures with Max!

Turkey Trouble by: Wendi Silvano

It is almost Thanksgiving do you have your Turkey ready?  Farmer Jake doesn't and this year his turkey is trying his best to not end up on the dinner table.

Author Wendi Silvano and illustrator Lee Harper have created the delightful story of Turkey Trouble.  Readers of all ages will enjoy the creative way that Turkey tries his best to avoid  Farmer Jake and have the best Thanksgiving a turkey has ever had.  The other farm animals are not tricked at all, but will Farmer Jake be tricked and end up without a turkey for Thanksgiving?

While you wait for your Thanksgiving meal take a few minutes and enjoy this story with some of the children in your family.

Night Animals by: Gianna Marino

Are all night animals scary?  What types of animals are night animals?  This is a great read-aloud that will get readers of all ages wanting to know more about these night creatures.

Gianna Marino in her book Night Animals has many of the animals of the night scared of the "big" thing that is coming.  What could it be?  When they discover that it is a night animal they are surprised to learn that they too are night animals!  But what will the campers think of all these animals entering their campsite?

This is a fun book that I know my younger readers will enjoy.

Duncan the Story Dragon by: Amanda Driscoll

Amanda Driscoll has written a delightful read aloud book that I think everyone will enjoy, Duncan the Story Dragon.

Duncan is a Dragon that loves to read.  When he reads the story comes to life and he gets so excited that fire shoots from his mouth.  Unfortunately, this burns up his book.  He never knows how the stories end.  He wants to read the words "the end".  He searches all over the countryside for a friend who will read a story to him so that he can finally hear those words.  When he finds a book loving friend Duncan truly has found happiness at last.  However, will "the end" really be the end?

I really loved this story and I'm sure all my younger readers will enjoy it as well.

The Most Magnificent Thing by: Ashley spires

The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires is a  magnificent read aloud story.

A young girl and her best friend, her pet dog, work together to create the most magnificent thing.  It is the thing that they young girl believes will be the most magnificent thing that she has ever made.   She has made many things in her young life but this time it is different this is the most magnificent thing that she has ever dreamed of making.

She creates many things trying her best to have it be just like what she has imagined.  No matter how hard she works it just isn't the most magnificent thing.  She makes more and more things and soon she is frustrated and quits.  When she looks at all the items she has made she decides that there are some good and bad with each item made, so she combines things, shares things, and soon she is using the most magnificent thing.  Finding joy in its use for her and her dog.

This story shows how we must never give up on our dreams.  If we think it we can make it as long as we work hard.  I liked how others found her items useful when she didn't think they were of any use to her.  This is a great book to share with your children to encourage them to keep on working, to never give up on their dreams.

After reading this book go and make something, be creative!

LA Book Festival 2015

Three great book author/illustrators that I was able to listen to and meet for a few minutes at the 2015 LA Book Festival.   It's Only Stanley is the newest book by author/illustrator Jon Agee and I've already shared it with second graders and they loved it!  Salina Yoon has written and illustrated many books for children.  Her newest series is Bear who you can see in this review in the book Found.  In 2013 author/illustrator Bob Shea wrote a great book about envy.  In Unicorn Thinks He's Pretty Great Goat is envious of all that Unicorn can do and Unicorn is envious of Goat, can these two learn to admire their differences and strengths and become friends?  I think this would be a great book to read to any child that might need some encouragement in making new friends.  I really enjoyed the Book Festival and cannot wait to attend next year.
